One of the profs in Science Ed lived in Coburg, and driving from his house into Eugene, discovered there’s a great pull-out on Coburg Road, where one can safely look across I-5 at this outcrop. Can’t get at it for close examination, but neither do you risk becoming road kill.

I see what you’re getting at with respect to what the columns are indicating. I think I need to take a few minutes (not right now) to sit and draw some cartoons and think about possible geometries of flow versus dike and sill.

Ah how well I remember that outcrop. Must have driven past it hundreds of times on my way to and from field work. Never did manage to stop and get a decent picture though, so it’s a delight to see yours.

It looks as if Dana Hunter and I will be doing a trip up to Quartzville on Monday (July 9). It’s an old gold mining district, and while it was poor in terms of $ value, it’s very rich in terms of geology. It’s a long day (though not physically too demanding), and short notice, but I think you’d find it a great intro to Western Cascades geology. It’s also a trip I’ve done like 40 or 50 times with a variety of groups, so it’s an area I know very, very well.
